I’ve been a visual artist since before I dared admit it!

It took a while to realize. I’d been to Boat School before returning to college to study painting.

I’ve had wonderful teachers:

Donald Lent, and Robert Feintuch at Bates College.

Jake Grossberg and Alan Coté at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College where I received an MFA.

I was in the first year of this program.*

Its format was unique at the time.

A multidisciplinary approach: painters, sculptors, writers, poets, film-makers and musicians meet daily. Critiques were program wide. All students and faculty gathered each evening. The program lasted three summer sessions with two long winters of independent work instead of two quick years and out.

Those long independent sessions of studio work had us hungry for community each spring. A good preparation for the long haul.

Art matures in isolation.

Artists need community.

We experienced both.
